We understand that emergencies happen now and then making it impossible to keep your obligations.  We try to keep our schedule open to children who need acute care, and an unexpected cancellation can mean that another sick child must wait longer to be seen than was really necessary.  For this reason, we have enacted a “no-show policy”.  If you are unable to keep your child’s appointment and did not give us 24 hours notice, there is no penalty the first time.  After the first no-show, you will be charged $25 and may be denied services until that fee has been paid.  After 3 no-shows, your family may be dismissed from our practice.  These occurrences are counted per family, not per child.

We also understand that it’s not easy getting your child to appointments on time.  One of the keys to reducing wait time is recognizing when a late patient must be rescheduled.  We want to treat every family fairly, and no one should have to wait extra time because the patient before them was late.  If you are more than 15 minutes late to your child’s appointment, you may be asked to reschedule.

Village Pediatrics has teamed with a couple great charity drives so you can easily contribute to your community at your child’s next appointment.  One for Books is a program designed to help build reading skills throughout the community by putting more books into the hands of students and onto the shelves of classroom libraries.  All you have to do is donate $1, or your spare change, and you will be recognized with a colorful addition to our banner.  Scholastic Book Fairs will match each dollar that is raised by donating books to Kids in Distressed Situations, National Center for Family Literacy, and Toys for Tots.  This drive will end on April 26.

If you prefer to make a non-monetary donation we are also collecting food and toiletry items for Bountiful Bags for IFC Pantry.  Bring your canned meats, pasta sauce, canned fruits and veggies, cereal, oatmeal, toothpaste, deodorant soap, feminine products, diapers and other goods and we’ll take care of the rest!

It’s easy to leave things behind at the pediatrician’s office, so we’re starting a “lost and found” on our webpage!  We try to keep everything that we find, so please check below to see if one of your child’s belongings is waiting to go home.

-One well-loved, pink stuffed piggy.  He really misses his best friend!

Once in a while we take all of our unclaimed items to the thrift store, so we’ll keep this list as up to date as possible.

BounceBack Kids has been chosen by the UNC Association of Nursing Students (ANS) as the beneficiary of their inaugural Heels for Healing 5K and Kids’ Fun Run! Heels for Healing will be held on Saturday, March 31 in Chapel Hill. BounceBack Kids™ is a Section 501(c) (3) nonprofit whose mission is to bring together and serve kids with life-challenging medical conditions to enrich the lives of participants and their families. Their goal is simple: Fitness, Fun and Family when children need it most!

The event will take place on UNC-Chapel Hill’s beautiful campus on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at 9am. The USATF certified 5K race will commence at 9am at the Old Well followed by a half mile Kid’s Fun Run at 9:50am. Click here to register.

Come celebrate Valentines in the Village on Friday February 10 from 2:30 to 4:30!  Village Pediatrics and lots of other participating businesses would love to shower your kids with treats and surprises, while mom and dad enjoy shopping for Valentine-themed gifts and racking up savings opportunities from local businesses.  Be sure start your route at Harrington Bank where your child will decorate his or her special gift bag.  Then just make your way around the village, stopping at businesses with balloons out front.  We would LOVE to see you there!

Maria is holding another one of her famous babysitting courses!  This class is open to kids ages 11-14, and will teach you about infant and child CPR, first aid, appropriate developmental play, and how to market your new skills as a babysitter.  Snacks will be provided and you will receive a certificate of completion for your newly acquired skills.  This 2-day class will be at the Chapel Hill Community Center Meeting Room from 4:00pm – 7:00pm on February 23 and 24.  Go to the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation website and browse the Youth and Teen Programs.

1.  Over the counter cough and cold preparations are not effective and they are not safe in children under 6 years old.

2.  The following simple remedies can be very helpful:
a) Humidifier for the bedroom
b) Vick’s Rub – Apply to the feet and put on socks!
c) Homemade Cough Syrup:  2-3 ounces of warm water or decaf tea mixed with one tablespoon of honey. Give one teaspoon of mixture as needed.  Honey has no side effects, but is ONLY for children 12 months and older.
d) Saline spray or rinse, or Neti Pot for the the nose and sinuses
e) Warm shower

3.  Coughs that should be evaluated:
a) Dry, repetitive, irritating
b) Coughs with fever >101
c) Coughs without nasal congestion

4.  Your physician may recommend a prescription strength cough/cold medication if your child is over 3 years old – Use exactly as prescribed and do not combine with any other cough/cold products
